In french army, it is a general view that WW2 US soldiers were bad and that TODAY US soldiers are much much better (by skills and disciplin) and now really on par with french troops quality if not better on some point (and inferior on others).

ROTFL!!! Are we talking about the french army that surrendered to the germans after 33 days of fighting in 1940? And the American army that gave them back their country in 1944? And you think that *NOW* your military - which hasn't had a "victory" since sinking the "Rainbow Warrior" are on par with US military forces? Holy shit! What an amazing piece of self-delusion.

Not quite correct: one British man got away (a Dr. Brydon) and a few sepoys. Quite a large number of British were taken prisoner.

Let me repeat this for you...

Read about Elphinstone's Army

Also, I don't know if this has been posted already; if so, I apologize. And my apologies for the quality & grammar. I Had to depend on my less-than-enthusiastic wife to translate the French into English.

You are a liar, this is where you got the translation from:

serendipity.ruwenzori.net . . .

Why pretend you got it translated from your wife?
Unless she's called Jean-Marc Liotier?

What do you mean exactly? Most of Elphinstone's army were killed, (especially the Indian soldiers and the Indian civilians) but many British civilians and officers were taken prison (including Elphie, who died in captivity). IIRC Capt. Souter of the 44th was also captured at Gandamak. Dr. Brydon was the only European to get clear (and BTW he wasn't the model for Dr. Watson, it was a doctor who survived Maiwand).

If you are taken prisoner or wounded (mind you) then you are not capable of fighting for me...

I agree we are mincing words here...however there was only one army personnel that 'survived' the encounter...

Let me be really clear about what I said...

Near the rivers...it's a bitch of a place to fight in, because of the mountains and valleys...the United States is doing it right...small well trained groups with high mobility...

Read about Elphinstone's Army...one fucking guy survived...

Those that are saying send more troops, might want to think that over...

Blah blah blah, always the same shit. We were one of the 1st attacked. The french government capitulated, but french people continued fighting.

USA started fighting SOME YEARS AFTER (in 1941-1942), and had time to build planes, weapons, tanks, etc... All your industry was focused on military production.

It's never easier to fight when the war theater is our own country. You've been fucked in Pearl Harbour, your were fucked in New York during Sept 11th 2001, etc...

In 1941, pearl Harbour, your army was not very prepared, isn't it? It was the same for us. It's easy to make comments NOW about what happened in 1939, especially for american dumbass like you. If you can not understand that, STFU.

10 May 22 June 1940, so 44 days not 33.

And we would have been beaten in 7 days with WW2 US GIs instead of 44 days with french soldiers.

In 1942 (operation Torch ) you had difficulties during several days with only second rate french troops without decent equipement.Should I mention Kasserine pass?

In 1944 you fought with difficulties only a depleted german army of only 30 divisions in France (depleted after 2 millions KIA of their best troops in eastern europe), instead of the fresh 150 german divisions of 1940 with a 3 to 1 air superiority for german, althought half of D Day troops were experimented british troops and you still had a 30 to 1 air superiority!

Don't posture on WW2 please. In beginning of WW2 only US Marines were decent troops and used only in Pacific.
Our task was much more difficult in 1940 than US had in 1944 with much much less means than you.

We still agree that today US army is the most professional US army ever seen on battlefield in comparison of other best armies of its time (UK, France or Australia for exemple).
Plus your usual massive harware superiority.
In WW2 your troops lacked completly of skills and disciplin and often with a weak motivation contrary of today.

Look what German did in 40 days so at 1 septembre 1941 in Russia while terrain was much more favorable for defense than France (less roads and a lot of marshes areas while our capital is networked to eastern border with numerous good roads and 150 miles from the border)
And one third of casualties only they had in France.

It is why in french army (or British or German) your WW2 troops have no good reputation.
No french soldiers would compare your today troops (with skills and disciplin and well formed) to WW2 US troops unless it is a ...disguized insult!
But still thank to have commited them.
And still, a lot of US GIs showed some courage in WW2 even lacking basic infantry skills.

One good thing - based on their experience in Afghanistan, the French army is finally getting some new boots.

Yeah, the French are retiring the 1960's era "rangers" in favor of "Meindels." More than 100,000 pairs have been ordered by the Defense Ministry from the German boot maker, Meindl.

And green area in valleys where ambush are more dangerous due to vegetation.
Moreover it would cost some money to buy a lot of desert uniform for Aghanistan and it is not needed.

Indeed because our soldiers complained after seeing equipement of other armies.
Usually tradition is french army is that comfort do not matter and soldiers have to be accustumated to hard conditions.
But with a full professional army which has difficulties to understand our involvment in Afghanistan for a lot, it is understandable that they try to improve comfort at level of other NATO armies.
BTW I like german boots :D

Another stupid question?

Instead of looking for homo sex you should read 5 grade History Textbook. Then you would know that if you declare a war, you better fight it and not just hide behind the Maginot line. Tool

Shows what a disaster can occur when stupid gutless and incompetent people are given command. Gordon Brown is a modern day equivalent of Elphinstone.

The British army marched back into Afghanistan and kicked their treacherous arses after that humiliation, and then left again because the place wasn't worth a shit anyway. :?

After Clinton wrecked the military, it took the great George Bush eight years to bring it back to outstanding levels of professionalism. With the Democrat Barack Hussein Obama in charge the military will again deteriorate. Murtha and the other liberal democrats want to slash the defense budget by 25%. That will result in no more equipment, no more training, no more recruitment, and no more R&D.
