En début d'après-midi, le procureur de la République de Montpellier, Brice Robin, avait indiqué qu'il ne résultait pas "des premières investigations que nous avons affaire à des terroristes mais peut-être à des jeunes qui, parce qu'ils avaient un bagage de chimie, voulaient tester la fabrication d'une bombe artisanale". Toutefois, avait-il ajouté, "on verra à l'issue des premières auditions si les éléments apparaissent de nature à faire envisager une entreprise terroriste". Dans ce cas-là, le parquet de Montpellier, en charge de l'enquête avec le SRPJ de Montpellier, s'en dessaisirait au profit de la section antiterroriste du parquet de Paris.
